Want to know more about nanotechnology and what it offers us? Well here we go…
The term nanotechnology was coined in the mid 70’s by a Japanese university professor called Norio Taniguchi, and then its concepts were explored during the 80s in much more depth. Research developed into findings and the nanotechnology world 'grew' from there.
Many ideas in the nano world are considered science fiction and impossible to truly create, but that’s just wrong! In the last 15 years over a dozen Nobel prizes have been awarded in nanotechnology, and currently over 600 companies are doing research into nanotechnology, including some of the world's largest corporations such as IBM and Samsung. Plus, almost every university in the world has a nanotechnology department!
You might also be surprised to hear that nanotechnology has played a role somewhere along the line of many products we can already buy, such as automobile parts, clothing, make-up and ski wax. It’s already all around us if you know where to look. Companies are simply able to apply their knowledge and findings into existing industries, improving many different products and helping ideas become reality. For example, there is a lot of work going into helping improve disease treatment through nanotechnolgy.
It’s is very much an 'enabling' technology, which is always evolving as scientists and engineers discover new things in their research. It’s a pretty amazing world to be a part of, so check out NanoMission to find out more about the nano world, or ask your teachers where you can find out more information on this amazing technology.
