Flipside 33 outsmart spread

Not celebrity squares

As a new academic year begins, what can science teach us about doing better at school? The answer is quite a lot - read the feature in Flipside 33 and outsmart your teachers!

Thanks to the Learning and Skills Council we’ve also been checking how celebs did at school, and got some top study tips along the way.

Jonny Wilkinson, England rugby world cup hero says: ‘My way of getting down to revision was to run off all my energy, have a good meal and then relax and focus for three or so hours before bed with files, books and essential background music. I also found making notes on the most salient points helped me to remember important facts.’

Lily Cole, model and St. Trinians start, has a place at Kings College, Cambridge University. She will study Politics and English on the three-year course after getting 5 As at A-level last year. She says: ‘Basically I took ten minutes out to dance every few hours! Kept my spirits up!’

Rick Edwards, co-host of T4’s Freshly Squeezed, studied natural sciences at Cambridge. He says: ‘Planning my revision time really helped, but I wish I hadn’t spent so much time creating such an elaborate colour-coordinated revision timetable. Not only did it take me about two days of valuable revision time to devise, it also freaked me out whenever I looked at it!’

Instead he recommends another visual prompt: ‘Post-it notes! Write facts on them: stick them all round your room. Somehow the stuff seeps into your mind. Amazing!’ he says.
